Walking into a yarn aisle is fun—until every label looks different. You don't need a perfect yarn collection to start. A small amount of smooth, easy-to-see yarn and a suitable hook is enough to practise.
Start with yarn you can see clearly
For beginners, a smooth medium-weight yarn is often easier to work with than very thin, fluffy or novelty yarns. Choose a light-to-medium solid color so you can identify each stitch. Black or highly textured yarn can make stitch placement harder to spot.
Read the yarn label
Look for fiber content, approximate weight category, skein weight, yardage or meterage, washing instructions, and a suggested hook size. Suggested hook sizes are starting points, not rules; the project pattern and desired fabric matter too.
Common fiber options
- Acrylic: often accessible and available in many colors. Texture and softness vary by brand.
- Cotton: gives good stitch definition for many projects, but some cotton yarns feel less stretchy.
- Wool or wool blends: can have elasticity, but care instructions and sensitivities matter.
Match the yarn to the project
A dishcloth, amigurumi toy and scarf may have different needs. Follow the pattern's fiber and gauge guidance where possible. Yarn substitution can change drape, shape, yardage and final size.
Buy only what you need for a practice project
You can start with one suitable skein, a matching hook, scissors and a stitch marker. Make a small practice swatch before buying materials for a large project. If you plan to estimate a project's yarn cost later, our yarn cost calculator can help with the arithmetic.
What to avoid when starting
Very dark, eyelash, boucle, highly fuzzy or tiny thread yarns can obscure stitches. That doesn't make them bad yarns—they may simply be less forgiving for your first attempts.
