Count stitches in your sample or use the count from a pattern when provided. Measure your own stitches per minute on a similar section. Add time for difficult techniques, joining pieces, weaving ends, and breaks. For projects with many different stitch types, estimate each section separately.
The tool cannot infer stitch counts from a project photo or accurately estimate time from the item's size alone. If you do not know your total stitch count, begin with a small sample before relying on the number for a deadline.
